People of Darkness

The People of Darkness is a novel written by Tony Hillerman. It is one of his first novels and it relates the story of the Navajo people and their police chief, Jim Chee. In this story many of the Navajo people are dying of cancer, but the cause of the cancer is very mysterious. As the police chief becomes very involved with a white woman, clashes erupt between the chief and his people because of cultural differences. At the same time the powers that be keep thwarting any investigation into the deaths of all these Navajo people, As only Hellerman can, the reader is on the edge of his seat as all the events are weaved into one great mystery and finally revealed.
