The Practice of Meditation

Nobody knows exactly when meditation was first discovered, but some experts believe that it could have been practiced by hunters and gatherers many thousands of years ago. It is also thought that meditation was used by tribal shamans, who were considered to be in direct contact with the unseen world of spirits. Many documents and scholars say that the history of meditation can be traced back 5,000 years ago. It seems that it was explored by ancient man, many times while staring into the flames of a burning fire.

In 588 B.C., Prince Siddhartha Gautama found enlightenment after sitting beneath a banyan tree. What resulted from that experience would later be known as Buddhism. During the 2nd century A.D. a group of Christian monks called the Desert Fathers, escaped from the world to live in modesty. They used meditation to be closer to God and more than 1,000 years later, meditation would become a major part of the Christian practice. As time went on, the people who meditated were able to come up with different styles of the practice. They contain a wide range of psychophysical and spiritual facets, both of which can lead a person to a higher level of mental concentration along with increased spirituality.

Some of the different types of meditation include Taoism, Buddhism, Islam meditation, Hinduism and many others. Since they come from many different cultures, the followers can have their own understanding of meditation. They can also have various sets of practices that can come be experienced from it.
