What Can Children Teach Parents?

Children can teach their parents many things. For one, they tend to be more open and honest about their feelings and thoughts. They see the hypocrisy in parents telling them to not do as they are doing, but as they are told to do. They watch their parents to see how to think, speak and act in many situations. Parents are often embarrassed when their children act like or speak like the parents in public.

Moral development of children must start when they are very young. The parental role will have an impact on teaching morality to children. The parents influence will stay with them throughout their lives and be something they can hold on to, in most incidences. Children need to be taught how to deal with other people and how to be fair and honest. Adults can sometimes forget these values, so the children can reteach these actions to their parents when they see them forget. Oftentimes the child won't think to wait until they are alone, but will publicly tell the parent what they did wrong. This will take some teaching at home as to when it is appropriate to say and when it is not.

If a child feels a secure attachment to the parents in infancy, they will more likely develop the coping skills to comply with family rules. Children that are taught to be grateful and show respect for their elders will most often show respect to their peers. By their example they will teach others and gain respect from them.
